Independence Day Contest

Idea Behind #WhatFreedomMeansToMe Contest!

Swati Gupta, Team Avishkaar

Our 68th Independence Day is approaching - 15th August 2015. A day observed with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervor. August is the month where the martyrs, who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for independence, are remembered and revered the most.

Every year this day reminds me of #Freedom. We’ve all heard since childhood that Freedom is not free. It took years of efforts, non-violence and other movement by our national freedom fighter to attain Freedom. We read about freedom, dream about freedom, rejoice in the notion of freedom, teach, advocate, and hope for freedom, but what do we mean by freedom? Freedom means many things to many people. If you ask me, to me, freedom means each moment, of each day, of every year, I can do all things, or at least try all things that I desire.

I was inquisitive to know what freedom means to children. They see the world from a different perspective. So I asked my 11 year old nephew “Yash, What is freedom for you?” He thought for a second and quickly bounced, “Freedom is ki School hamare tareeke se chalna chahiye.(School should run according to our method)”. I was awestruck. Parents and Teachers instinctively know that their children need to learn things for themselves. But do they let children play, explore and try things out like we used to? Back then we explored our world, we got mucky, we climbed trees, walls, fences, we jumped far and leapt over hedges. We explored places and frolicked in austere ones.

When we spoke to some children in the age group of 5 to 12, we were amazed to learn the different meanings they gave to that one word ‘freedom’. This intensified my craving to know what other kids think freedom is. And that is how my Avishkaar box team, in partnership with RivoKids, came up with #WhatFreedomMeansToMe contest.
